Looking back on your journey isn’t about reminiscing, it’s more about consciously arranging your creative future.
Us creative souls are an unusual bunch, we’re often only looking forward; always chasing the next project, the next thing, the next milestone, but I’m discovering that the greatest growth is often inside those quiet moments of reflection.
I recently found a journal I’d begun writing a few years ago and it was interesting to look back, particularly when something caught my eye…
In it I talk about what I now know were massive creative blocks and how they felt like the highest towers in the highest castle. The despair and self-depreciation was really quite bad and difficult to read, as I remember those feelings being all-consuming.
But, as I sit now and look back at that time, I can see how far I’ve come and some of those massive towers now seem like stepping stones. This really made me understand just how far I’ve journeyed on my creative path and it’s just what I want to talk about today.
The Magic of Creative Retrospection
I’ve spoken before about my years and years of creative blocks where I couldn’t write a word. But, one important thing I learned from that experience is that reflection isn’t just a passive exercise, where we look back fondly like we’re watching some kind of romantic movie filmed with a soft focus lens and calm music playing.
No.
It’s actually an active tool for growth. When we take the time to analyse the journey we’ve been on, we get to see some valuable insights that can remain hidden in the everyday rush of life.
If you think of it like creating a map of your creative territory - every reflection adds more details, colours and dimensions to your understanding.
Here are some of the benefits I’ve discovered of taking time for regular creative reflection:
Pattern Recognition - you start to see the rhythms of your creative process and begin to understand your own inspiration and tendencies, which then allows for a greater insight of where you can make changes for the better.
Energy Mapping - you begin to see which projects inspire or deplete your energy reserves far more clearly and this then allows you to work out how you can better structure your time to balance the energising projects with the non-energising ones.
Growth Tracking - if you start to look back at your journey you will see those small improvements clearly, which will help build your confidence that you are going the right way and perhaps you’ve made more progress than you realised.
Strategic Planning - reflection allows you to make decisions about your future and the direction you want to go, in a more evidence-based way, which means you can then build and grow much faster and see what gaps need to be plugged.
Creative Confidence - by understanding the journey you’ve been on you can then begin to trust your creative instincts and see your own patterns and preferences more clearly, which means you can then fight off that self-doubt by understanding which part of your natural process you’re in.
The Art of Creative Documentation
Creative documentation is about keeping the journey of the evolution of your projects from conception to finished product.
Think of it as your personal time capsule. It’s not about being judgemental of your past creative work but rather to understand the journey and evolution of your creative spirit.
For me, I find that regular documentation will helps with:
Identifying your unique creative rhythms and patterns,
Understanding the environments that spark your best work,
Recognising when you need support vs when you need alone-time,
Tracking the evolution of your ideas and skills,
Building a file of inspiration for future projects
As a writer I often write bits of scenes, ideas, plot lines and different random bits of things as I go along. These often don’t end up in anything but they sometimes spark an idea for a twist in my current work, a way to solve a problem or a whole new project.
I also love to look back at my very first drafts of the work I do and it really shows how far those drafts travel to get to a finished product, which is an immensely gratifying realisation when you compare it.
Practice Reflection Exercise
Take a moment now to do a brief but powerful reflection exercise. Find a quiet space and consider these questions:
What creative achievement from the past month fills you with pride?
Which creative challenge taught you your most important lesson?
What common thread runs through your moments of greatest creativity?
Where do you see yourself creatively in six months?
The Power of Sustained Creative Support
While personal reflection is important, having a creative guide can boost your growth hugely. Think of it like tending a garden - your plants will grow alone, but they will flourish with care and attention.
The real magic happens when reflection meets guidance. A creative coach can help you to see your blind spots, challenge limiting beliefs, and create actionable strategies for growth. This combination of internal reflection and external support creates a powerful foundation for creative evolution.
But, it’s not right for every creative person, and I only take on people who are fully committed and embrace the work we can do together. Some people work better alone, and it’s important to know which you are and not make assumptions that you are one particular way or another. Generally most of us benefit from some kind of discussion, accountability and outside ideas to spark our own.
Some of the benefits of a coach to support you can be:
Deeper awareness of creative patterns and blockages
Faster breakthrough moments in creative projects
Sustainable creative practices that withstand challenges
More confident decision-making in creative endeavours
Authentic expression that resonates with audiences
Clearer pathways to creative goals
